1. Two out of three people don't seek help for their anxiety despite it being very manageable through therapy and lifestyle changes. Many people believe their symptoms or experience of anxiety are not important enough to ask for help with and this stops them coming forward. Plenty of people also believe that nothing can be done, that thoughts they have which make them anxious are something they just have to live with. This is a common misconception and when taught techniques correctly, you can learn to take much more control.
2. Medicine isn't the only solution. In fact, many medicines prescribed for Anxiety come with some undesirable side effects and do nothing to help you understand the root cause of your anxiety. While they can be very effective at managing the physical manifestations, they do little for resolving the emotional issues that are at the core of your anxiety. Some side effects include:
- Weight Loss / Gain
- Dizziness or Drowsiness
- Decrease in Libido
- Erratic Moods
- Dependence on Medicine
3. Parental influence has a lot to do with how anxious you are as a child and ultimately therefore an adult. If you grew up with nervous parents, it's likely you will learn and take on some of these behaviors. If you grew up being criticized or undermined, this will have an impact on your levels of anxiety too.
4. Anxiety in children can be the underlining cause for other behavioral issues. Bed wetting for example as well as anger issues. Children struggling with anxiety may have problems concentrating, sleeping, getting involved in activities in school or socially and forming friendships. Educating children on what worry is and simple calming techniques can be very effective in helping them to feel much better.
5. Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) accounts for 30% of mental health issues dealt with by GP visits. A staggering 67% of Brits report that money worries are the reasons behind their anxiety.
6. Social Media has been directly linked to the sudden surge in anxiety for teenagers and those in their 20s. The habit of comparing yourself to those you follow on social media has increased feelings of insecurity, inadequacy low self esteem and also sparked a rise in the Fear Of Missing Out. All these things contribute to feelings of anxiety and dissatisfaction with the yourself and your life.
7. Anxiety manifests itself in many different ways and is very different for different people. Not only are there emotional and mental symptoms there are also physical symptoms too. People can experience any number of combination of the following:
- Intense fear
- Fear you are ‘going mad’
- Restlessness, fidgeting/ inability to concentrate
- Sense of impending danger
- Nervousness feeling ‘on edge'
- Sleep difficulties
- Rapid heartbeat/ Irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness/Stomach discomfort/pain/nausea
- Drowsiness and tiredness
- Aching muscles especially in the shoulders/chest and/or abdomen
- Irregular periods
- Difficulty Swallowing
